A nine-year-old boy found one of the world’s most dangerous snakes in his garden in Co Offaly today.
Little Fionn Kilmurray was playing in his back garden in the village of Rhode when he made the surprising discovery and raised the alarm with his mother Aoife.
Aoife told RTE that her son was acting “as cool as a cucumber” when he told his mother about the snake in the garden.
The reptile turned out to be a saw-scaled viper that is responsible for more deaths each year than any other snake.
Aoife called the National Reptile Zoo, who asked her to put a box on the snake until her team arrived.
The director of the National Reptile Zoo, James Hennessey, said the snake will be brought to its headquarters in Kilkenny and will likely then be sent to the UK to participate in venom studies.
This is the first time in history that a saw-scaled viper has been found in Ireland and the snake is believed to have arrived here in a shipment of stone that arrived from India.
Aoife said her son Fionn is delighted with his find and can’t wait to go to school tomorrow to show his classmates photos of the snake.
