440 employees of the pharmaceutical company Viatris in Dublin will lose their jobs as part of a “restructuring plan” that will see the closure of its Baldoyle operations in a period of two years.

arlier today, the company that employs 45,000 people worldwide, announced that five plants will be affected due to its “restructuring initiative.”

It confirmed that its Baldoyle operation would be among the plants that would suffer job losses.

Viatris is the result of a merger between the pharmaceutical companies Mylan and Upjohn.

The Mylan plant in Baldoyle is a manufacturer of oral solid dose medications.

The company, in its statement this morning, announced its intention to “close, reduce or divest” up to 15 manufacturing plants around the world that are deemed “no longer viable due to overcapacity, challenging market dynamics or a change in its product portfolio towards more complex products ”.

Viatris said it expects 20% of its workforce, or 9,000 employees, to be affected by streamlining its operations to “maximize long-term value creation” and “optimize its business capabilities.”

No one was available on Viatris or Mylan to immediately comment on the announcement.

Meanwhile, local councilor Joan Hopkins (Social Democrats) who lives in Baldoyle, said the announcement will come as a shock to employees and the community at large.

“Right before Christmas, it’s terrible and a real blow to the area,” he told Independent.ie this afternoon.

“There is so much unemployment due to the pandemic and Brexit,” he said.

However, he said he was “quietly optimistic” that another company could take over the site, which is located in the local industrial park and is relatively new to the area.

“It is one of the most modern buildings in the industrial estate,” he said.

“I would be cautiously optimistic that someone could step in,” he said.

“I think there will be opportunities for someone else,” he said.

But there is no doubt that today’s announcement will cause workers a lot of anxiety and concern, he added.

“It’s disappointing and very scary right now,” he said.
