PLUS 43 people have died after contracting coronavirus in Ireland.
The Health Department has confirmed that as of 6 p.m. Yesterday, April 30, a total of 1,232 people diagnosed with Covid-19 sadly passed away.
The Health Protection Surveillance Center has reported a previously reported death.
An additional 359 confirmed cases of Covid-19 have also been confirmed as of 6 p.m., April 30, bringing the total for Ireland to 20,612.
As always, the HSE is working quickly to identify any case contacts that the recently confirmed cases may have had, to advise them and further reduce the spread of the virus.
New figures released by the HPSC indicate that of all confirmed cases, 5,627 are health workers: 27% male and 73% female.
Of those 5,627 cases in health workers, 210 required hospitalization for the disease; 34 required treatment in Intensive Care Units, and five regrettably died.
Speaking yesterday at a press conference announcing the new figures, Dr. Tony Holohan, Medical Director of the Health Department, said:
“The latest COVID-19 case report on health workers reveals that 34% of cases are related to nurses, health assistants are 24%, and cases among doctors are 7%.
“Since the pandemic began in Ireland, 72 nurses, 40 health assistants, 22 doctors and 45 other allied health workers have been hospitalized with COVID-19.”
Dr. Ronan Glynn, Deputy Medical Director of the Department of Health, said:
“Health workers are at risk every day during this pandemic. Supporting them and doing everything possible to protect them in their work is a priority not only for NPHET and HSE, but for society in general. The will of the people staying at home and following public opinion, health advice has been essential in this effort. “
Professor Philip Nolan, Chairman of NPHET’s Irish Epidemiological Modeling Advisory Group, said:
“To understand the importance of our next steps, we must look back at the pattern of the epidemic in early March. In 10 days we went from 50 people in the ICU to 140 people in the ICU. Currently, there are 106 patients in the ICU” . If an increase similar to that of our current ICU figure occurs, it would be very difficult for us to manage patient treatment. This reflects the sensitivity required to relax the constraints. “
