Eighteen more people have died of coronavirus in the state, as the number of confirmed cases increased by 219, according to figures released on Saturday.
This brings the total number of Covid-19-related deaths to 1,446, according to the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
There are now 22,760 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the Republic.
Analysis of 22,495 cases known through Thursday by the Center for Health Protection Surveillance (HPSC) shows that the average age of those who contracted the virus is 49 years.
Women represent 57% of reported cases, and men the remaining 43%.
Some 2,954 people have been hospitalized after contracting the virus, 13% of known cases. Of the patients who required hospitalization, 381 were admitted to intensive care.
Dublin still accounts for almost half of all cases, with 10,948 in the county, followed by Kildare with 6 percent of the cases (1,317) and then Cork with 1,205, accounting for 5 percent of the national total.
Some 6,669 confirmed cases of Covid-19 are associated with healthcare workers.
Community spread
In cases where health officials could establish how the virus was contracted, community transmission accounted for 61% of cases. This was followed by close contact with a Covid-19 patient (35 percent) and traveling abroad (3 percent).
Four other Covid-19 related deaths have been reported in Northern Ireland said the Department of Health there. The latest figure brings the total deaths from the coronavirus outbreak in the north to 430. A further 56 positive cases have been diagnosed there, bringing its total confirmed cases to 4,078.
Health Minister Simon Harris said Saturday that the number of Covid-19 patients treated in the state’s intensive care units has further decreased.
In a tweet, Harris confirmed that the number of patients infected with the new coronavirus being treated in intensive care has dropped to 72, compared to 76 on Friday and 99 last Saturday.
He said this constituted “good progress,” while urging people to “stay the course” of maintaining safe practices during the pandemic.
A total of 378 people with Covid-19 have been admitted to intensive care during the outbreak.
On Friday, the NPHET announced that 10 outbreaks of Covid-19 occurred in meat processing plants across the state, and that 566 employees were infected.
HSE outbreak control teams were dispatched to each plant to try to control outbreaks, medical director Dr. Tony Holohan said in the briefing.
Compliance with restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the virus remains very high, according to Dr. Holohan, who presented a variety of data on vehicle traffic, heavy vehicle movements, public transport numbers, use of ATMs, and activity. personal, as measured by Google.
“Together, these data say that the population is doing very well and that this compliance is maintained,” he said.
Direct provision
All residents of direct supply centers, where 149 cases have been reported in 12 groups, are being considered for evaluation, Dr. Holohan said.
Any asylum seeker in direct disposition who has Covid-19 and cannot self-insulate has the right to use the isolation facility at Citywest, officials clarified.
Dr. Holohan said he expected schools to resume their activities in the fall “if things are going well for us,” but “it is impossible to make certain predictions about where we will be in early September.”
NPHET was still considering whether the reopening of the schools would be complete or partial at first, he added.
A breakdown of the virus instance among the oldest age groups provided for the first time shows that those older than 85 years account for 10.2 percent of all coronavirus cases and 45.6 percent of deaths.
