About 200 vehicles have been destroyed by Gardai in Dublin as part of a crackdown on illegal dumping.

Officers demolished 160 cars that were abandoned by owners on the St. Christopher’s Lane property in Cappoge, warning those identified that they will be hit with a hefty fine.

The End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) operation took place on Wednesday on the north side, where the multitude of cars from the field were removed and recycled.

In addition to this, 170 tons of debris was removed from the area during the Garda cleanup.

Plans have been put in place to stop more illegal dumping activities, with CCTV, waste inspection and Garda surveillance being used to monitor the facilities in the future.

The mayor of Fingal, councilor David Healy said it was a “necessary operation”.

He said: “This ensures the proper dismantling of an unauthorized and environmentally damaging situation.

“The unauthorized storage and dismantling of vehicles for scrapping (ELVs – disused cars and goods vehicles) represent a significant risk to the environment.

“ELVs contain many hazardous materials such as lead-acid batteries, lubricating oil, coolant, brake fluid, and catalytic converters, all of which must be disposed of safely to avoid contamination.”

He added: “I am delighted to see such effective action by the Fingal County Council’s Waste Control Division in their operation against these sites.

“I congratulate them and the other organizations (An Garda Siochana, Customs, the Department of Social Protection and the Main Regional Waste Control Authority) involved.”
