With less than two months to go before Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 12 range, we are at this very moment completely immersed in the pinnacle of the rumor cycle. In case you were in doubt, an individual claiming to have been present during the recording of the keynote for Apple’s yet to be announced event in October, tweeted about a stream of information they claimed to have heard .
The Twitter user in question – @LeaksApplePro – has taken a wide variety of parts of Apple’s procedures, from product information to executive Phil Schiller’s supposedly improved physical fitness in the wake of quarantine. The highlights (assuming one of these is real, everywhere) are about dropping some highly anticipated features in the iPhone 12 range, as well as about bringing back AirPower.
For starters, LeaksApplePro claims that the iPhone 12 Pro lacks a fast refresh rate of any kind – neither 90 nor 120Hz – and will also not include wireless charging, which has been a common feature on Samsung’s recent flagship phones. The individual describes Apple’s new handsets as the “same iPhones with better camera, RAM and A14“with a slightly better battery”, cold water is pouring in on many of the much anticipated new features and changes regarding the upcoming iPhones that have been reported so far.
The tweets going on to claim the iPhone 12 will include a blue option, and the broader flatter styling will resemble a “mix” of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, as well as the latest iPhone 11 and 11 Pro devices, while no changes have been made to the notch. Apple will announce the event on October 1, LeaksApplePro claims, with the event itself starting on Tuesday, October 13 and Wednesday, October 14.
Do you remember that when I said notch stays the same and your guys said I was lying? I’m sorry to tell you this, but I was not.August 19, 2020
Those are the highlights, though there are so many more to unpack here. We are told that the Apple Watch Series 6 will present a “sh * tty upgrade”, whatever that means. At least two ARM-powered Macs will debut. And at the show’s conclusion, Cupertino will discover his perfect, back-from-the-dead AirPower charging mat.
In subsequent tweets, LeaksApplePro later claims that CEO Tim Cook discovered that the event was leaked on the Internet, and ordered everyone from the area. That brings us to today, when LeaksApple Pro shared screenshots of what they claimed to be an AirPods Studio TV commercial, but hours later doubled back and informed readers that the video he was sent – one that clearly uses a font that does not quite match Apple’s branding – was in fact false, and he was driven by someone else to share it.
The whole odyssey is very strange, sinuous and suspicious. However, if we take the “leaks” ourselves for face value, this is not the first time anyone has indicated that the iPhone 12 may lack a fast-refresh screen as a refurbished notch, despite some previous rumors may have made us think. This is also not the first time we’ve heard Apple invent AirPower and plan to release it soon.
Finally, it’s hard to know what to make of one of these. Rumors of unreleased products should always be taken with a degree of skepticism, regardless of their source. But the particular source of these leaks is so blatant, and the twists and turns so profound, that it almost discredits the content of the rumors themselves – which, ironically, are completely plausible, precisely because they have been reported before, in one context or another.
I’m ready for October – both because I’m really jealous, and because I do not know if I’m mentally prepared to deal with another six weeks of clutter drama.
