Playing on the iPad Pro has been … well, a mixed bag. Sure, Apple’s high-end tablet has a big, bright screen and super-fast A12Z processor, but the input methods have still been largely focused on touch, so it doesn’t exactly replace anyone’s laptop. However, the new features that come in iPadOS 14 seek to make the iPad a more player-friendly device.
One of the hidden iPadOS 14 features Apple didn’t brag about on stage at WWDC 2020 is that mouse and keyboard support is finally coming to the iPad. It’s an expired addition that could make Apple Arcade games a little more capable and help Apple’s renewed overall push for more games on its devices.

Apple revealed keyboard and mouse support in a developer-made video, showing how to add those new features to its apps. At WWDC, Apple also revealed that it is adding support for the Xbox Elite Wireless Series 2 Controller and the Xbox Adaptive Controller.
As The Verge points out, current iPad keyboard and mouse support is “really mediocre” and requires additional clicks and work, for a non-native feel experience.
I’m surprised Apple hasn’t added Adaptive Controller support before, as the company has long advocated for accessibility features that open its devices to more users.
iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and tvOS are also getting pro-level features like controller button remapping (in case you want to roll back buttons you approve and cancel) and controllers with haptic feedback and rumbling. Apple devices will also support lighting, touch panels, and paddles. Those first two are more tied to taking advantage of Sony’s DualShock controller features, while the third one is more aimed at Xbox controllers.
Apple is also supporting the battery level, so your system can better tell you when you need to recharge. Motion control support is also coming, another hack for iOS and iPadOS games that have used internal motion sensors.
With these features, as well as 3D audio support for AirPods, Apple seems to be on top of all the changes in the gaming landscape. All you need now is the rumored Apple TV 2020 box that is expected to be faster and (hopefully) ready for the next generation of games. Sure, Apple Arcade does have some nice clean games, but with the revolutionary PS5 and Xbox Series X on the horizon, Apple TV needs to be propped up with more power.
