iOS 14 makes your iPhone camera faster and easier to use

iOS 14 camera additions

iOS 14 adds various tools and features that make your iPhone camera faster and easier to use.

I have used beta version of iOS 14 since Apple announced it in June at WWDC. The new iPhone ($ 699 at Apple) OS adds features including home screen widgets, picture-in-picture video, Translation app and more. One of my favorite discoveries is a handful of new tools and improvements to the iPhone’s camera. New camera features generally only show up when a new iPhone is released, but Apple has been able to add more camera features only through software updates.

New features allow you to take photos faster and control exposure more easily. They can also help you stay still while taking pictures of Night Mode. These are all the improvements that make using the Camera app easier.

The new camera features should be welcome when they hit people’s iPhones this fall in the final iOS 14 release. However, I would not recommend downloading the public beta version of iOS 14 just to get them, especially on your primary iPhone. The software is still a beta version, so you could have bugs on your phone. It may not work with existing applications.

For a step-by-step guide to each of the new iOS 14 camera features, take a look at the video below.

iOS 14 adds guides to night mode

If you want to take a great photo in night mode, you should keep your phone as still as possible. In iOS 14, there are now guides to help you stabilize your phone when capturing portable photos in night mode.

If you move your iPhone too far, a couple of crosshairs (one yellow and one white) will appear on the screen. You can then adjust the way you hold the iPhone until the two crosshair guides meet. As a result, the cameras will be more stable and will be able to take sharper photos.

The new night mode guides are reminiscent of the cross-shaped guides that appear when taking top-down photos.

Reflect your selfies

When you take a selfie, the iPhone inverts your photo so that things like text can be read. But if you prefer selfies that are an image of you, iOS 14 supports you. You can now take a photo of the inverted version of your face. If there is text on your shirt, it will appear backwards as a mirror image.

It’s worth noting for the competition “which operating system had it first” that Android phones like Huawei have reflected selfies for years.

IOS 14 gives you the option to mirror your selfies (right) or keep them inverted (left).

To enable mirror selfies on your iPhone, go to Configurations, Camera and in the Composition section, turn on Mirror front camera.

The good thing is that it works for both photos and videos. That said, the live preview on screen is not reflected. So if you want to use your selfie camera to put on makeup, you will be flipped until you record a video or take a photo.

iOS 14 adds an exposure compensation dial to the camera app

Adjusting the brightness of an image you’re taking can be tedious in iOS 13. This is because focus and exposure are locked in a small yellow square that appears when you touch the screen. That yellow square is called the AF / AE (auto focus / auto exposure) frame.

If you want to cancel and change the exposure, touch the brightness icon to the right of the AF / AE box and drag the on-screen icon up or down. It is a pain to use because it is very small: I find myself making these little touches to get the shine where I want and end up feeling like a dog scratching a door for it to enter.

iOS 14 camera additions

iOS 14 adds a new exposure compensation dial in the camera’s tool drawer above the shutter button. There is even a small light meter that appears on the upper left side of the screen.

In iOS 14, there is a new exposure compensation dial that solves all of this and makes it easy to adjust the brightness of your photo lighter or darker. When you open the camera tool drawer over the shutter button, you will see a new exposure compensation icon which is a circle with plus and minus signs in the middle. Touch the icon to open the dial. Then slide the dial left or right to increase or decrease the exposure. Apple even labels the dial with exposure value numbers, just like a mirrorless or DSLR camera.

When the exposure dial is open, a small meter will appear at the top left of the screen. As you make adjustments, you can see how much change you are making. If you touch the little meter, it will also show the EV.

This makes it easy to adjust the brightness of a photo without all the finger scratches.

Faster shot-by-shot performance on iOS 14

Another great addition is the ability to take consecutive photos faster. When not in Burst mode, iOS 14 offers less delay between capturing a photo and allowing you to take another one immediately afterward. You can see a side-by-side comparison below with iOS 13 on the left and iOS 14 on the right. iOS 14 is dramatically faster.

iOS 14 does it so you can take consecutive photos faster. There is less time from one photo to another.

In iOS 14 beta, it’s turned on by default, but if you’ve turned it off and need to enable the feature, go to Configurations, then Camera. You’ll find Prioritize faster shots in the background.

iOS 14 allows you to use the volume up button for burst photos

Currently on iOS 13 when you press and hold any volume button, it will record a Quick Take video. The iPhone records the video as long as you hold down the button.

In iOS 14, you can reassign the volume up button to take a burst of photos when you press and hold it. As long as you hold down the volume up key, a burst of photos will continue.

You can reassign the volume up button in the Camera app so that when you press and hold it, take a burst of photos.

To enable this, go to Configurations, Camera and turn on Use Volume Up for Burst.
