The Bills told their rookies to return home from the team’s facilities Thursday after five positive tests for coronavirus this week, the team told ESPN.
According to ESPN, two players, including a rookie, tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. The novice is asymptomatic.
Although the Bills were not required to close their facilities after the positive test, the team decided to minimize the risk by sending their players home. As a result of the decision, the team held virtual meetings on Thursday instead of holding face-to-face meetings as scheduled.
“As medical experts informed us when the training camp opened, we expected to have positive tests for COVID,” the team said in a statement to ESPN. “With five from the start of the trial period last Tuesday, we decided to take a disciplined, proactive, and preventive approach to eliminate additional cases within our team.”
The rookies first reported to the training camp and underwent tests on July 21.
Unrecruited cornerback Ike Brown was placed on the team’s reserve / COVID-19 list on Monday. On Wednesday, the team put defensive tackle Vincent Taylor and wide receiver Duke Williams on the aforementioned list.
Over the past week, more than two dozen NFL players have chosen not to participate in the season as a result of COVID-19 concerns. These include Bills defensive tackle Star Lotulelei.
