Investigators project nearly 300K COVID-19 related deaths in the US in December

Researchers from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IMHE) at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine published a study projecting nearly 300,000 COVID-19-related deaths in the United States by December. IHME Director Dr Christopher Murray compared the COVID wave to a roller coaster in a press release Thursday. “The behavior of the public had a direct correlation with the transmission of the virus and in turn the number of deaths,” Murray said. “Such efforts to act more cautiously and responsibly will be an important aspect of COVID-19 forecasting and the up-and-coming patterns in individual states in the coming months and into years to come.”

The study predicts December 29, 295,011 deaths, but stricter mask policies could reduce that figure, potentially saving 66,000 people. The IHME suggested that orders of stay at home and the dismissal of non-essential businesses should be reinstated.
