Internal email tells mail workers not to connect or reinstall sorters: report

Post workers were told not to reconnect or reinstall sorters, even after Postmaster General Louis DeJoyLouis DeJoySorting of the Postal Service Disaster Service Senators Open Investigation into Delays in Presentation via Postal Service DC Delegate Marks Impact of Postal Service Quagmire on Community MORE announced that he was discontinuing changes to the postal services, according to an internal email received by CNN.

“Message last night to your respective Maintenance Managers,” wrote Kevin Couch, a director of maintenance operations. “They should not reconnect / re-install machines that were previously disconnected without HQ Maintenance approval, regardless of what direction they are getting from their plant manager.”

DeJoy, who became postmaster general in June, came under scrutiny for implementing a series of austerity measures at the Postal Service that have led to postal delays, including limiting overtime and removing machines for post-sorting of certain facilities.

The machines are an integral part of the Postal Service’s operations, as one machine can sort 35,000 pieces per hour. Yared Wonde, president of the Dallas Area Local of the American Postal Workers Union, told CNN that its service center unsuccessfully attempted to restore four barcode delivery machines.

DeJoy on Tuesday turned down a course on further changes to the Postal Service operations, including removal of sorting machines, after he opposed the return of a number of postal workers and lawmakers. He said changes were halted until after the election, in which many people are expected to vote by post during the COVID-19 pandemic.

CNN said it was unclear if there have been any developments since Couch sent the email, which appears to have been sent to managers in the western region.
