Indonesian volcano Mount Ili Levotolok erupts, closed airport | Indonesia

On Sunday, Indonesia’s Mount Ili Liotolok erupted, sending smoke and 2.5. left a column in the sky for miles (k km) and issued a flight warning and closed the local airport.

There were no reports of injuries or damage from the eruption in the remote part of the Southeast Asian archipelago. But officials raised the volcano’s warning level to its second-highest level as they warned of possible lava flows.

The 1.2-mile no-go zone around the crater was also extended to 2.5 miles, while flights were advised to rain down the volcanic ash at Vinopitu Airport in East Nusa Tenggara, which was temporarily closed.

“People are advised not to engage in any activity within a radius of 1 km from the pit,” the Indonesian Geological Survey said.

Located on the Ring of Fire, Indonesia has about 1 million active volcanoes, a boundary belt of tectonic plates rotating in the Pacific Ocean where frequent seismic activity is observed.

In late 2018, volcanic eruptions erupted in the watershed between Anak Krakatoa, Java and the islands of Sumatra, and an underwater landslide triggering a tsunami killed more than 400 people.
