The Indians announced today that right-handers Zach Plesac en Mike Clevinger are placed on the restricted list. Both pitchers broke the league’s health and safety records over the weekend when they went out after Saturday night’s game. In a few corresponding moves, Cleveland put outfielder again Tyler Naquin of the injured list and recalled lefty Logan Allen from the team’s alternative training site.
Today’s movement subtracts both Plesac and Clevinger from the active roster, although they continue to receive both service and salary when they are absent, Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets. This differs from the limited list assignments that follow a PED suspension. Apparently, the decision was made to add a few fresh bodies to the roster, while Plesac and Clevinger are being tested for Covid-19 every day – rather than as a direct form of punishment. The organization can reset the pair if it looks good, as long as both have tested negative at least twice (separated by a span of 24 hours).
It is not yet clear in how much (if any) the club will discipline the pair, although the higher ups of the team may not be happy with them. This is especially true for Clevinger, who did not speak, even after Plesac was disciplined and took a team with teammates after falling behind.
More is coming.
