1. I write about Within the NBA a lot, because it’s by far the best sports studio show on television.
Normally I highlight the frivolity and antics suggested by Ernie, Chuck, Kenny and Shaq, such as Charles Barkley calling Shaquille O’Neal a “Karen” or Ernie Johnson giving Barkley a cognitive test.
But the crew has shown that it can also handle serious topics and conduct important conversations.
That happened again Sunday when the hosts had an in-depth conversation about Montrezl Harrell who called Luka Dončić a “b **** – ass white boy” during Friday’s Clippers-Mavericks game. Harrell apologized to Dončić for Game 4 of the series on Sunday.
The conversation was raw and honest. No noises thrown out to generate headers, no carnival barking, no false alarms.
While Shaq apparently wanted to renovate the incident to regular trash, Kenny Smith and Barkley did their best to explain why they did not feel so simple, with Barkley saying “you do not have to have a double standard” when it comes to use race to insult someone.
Smith said: “As African Americans, for me, my whole thing is that I do not want to be identified. So if we are asked not to be identified, and I think Montrezl understands it, you can not identify him. If I do it. “first part of it would have just said, ‘I’m just angry and talking nonsense. It’s a habit you have to break. It’s a habit in sports, I think we should all break.”
The entire seven-minute segment is worth a look. And if all I’ve been up to is not luring you to play, there’s this: You can hear Ernie Johnson say, “b **** – ass white boy,” not once, but twice.
2. The best part of Luka Dončić’s crazy, game-winning three-pointer on Sunday was that ESPN’s Mike Breen gave it a double “bang”.
Even LeBron knew this was a special call.
3. We’m taking a break from you Fernando Tatís Jr. to give home runs to give you a crazy defensive play by Fernando Tatís Jr.
4. There was a lot of tribute to Kobe Bryant, who would turn 42 on Sunday. The Dodgers’ tribute was narrated by the legendary Vin Scully.
5. This week SI Media Podcast has an interview with Keith Hernandez.
Hernandez, who calls Mets games for SNY, took a lot of heat for siding with Rangers and Padres manager Jayce Tingler against Fernando Tatís Jr. after Tatís hit a grand slam on a 3-0 field with the Padres up 10- 3 in the eighth inning.
However, Hernandez explains on the podcast that he has reconsidered his position and now has another take.
The former MVP also shares several amazing stories about his legendary comeo in the episode “The Boyfriend” of Seinfeld. Hernandez talks about how Larry David helped him deliver his memorable “I’m Keith Hernandez” line, while also getting clean about his Seinfeld fandom.
