The number of people hospitalized with coronavirus has risen by more than a quarter in England in a single day.

On Sunday there were 478 people hospitalized – the highest daily figure since early June – 386.

About 2,800 patients are hospitalized with covid in England, compared to more than 17,000 at the peak of the epidemic.

There was no entry into Northern Ireland, while data from Scotland is not yet available for Sunday, and cases in Wales are considered separate.

According to the government’s Coronavirus Dashboard, more than a third of new entrants to England (ad44) (433 of) were in the North West, North East and Yorkshire.

As always, we should be careful about reading more in a day’s shift.

But of all Covid’s criteria, hospital admissions are probably the most reliable and they were growing quite slowly before the boom on Sunday.

Unfortunately, we should expect the case to continue to grow.

This is the time of year when emergency admissions for respiratory illness increase.

In a normal year, we can expect 1000 entries a day for flu and respiratory viruses by December.

What we don’t know is the extent to which common ailments are adding to this covid clan.

This new admission means that approximately %% of hospital beds are now occupied with covid patients.

There are reports that hospitals in the north of England in particular are very busy.

But elsewhere the beds are free. The decline in other services, from cancer care to routine surgery, means that the level of bed occupations is about a quarter lower than normal.

However, the unions point out that staff shortages mean that doctors and nurses are not always available to care for patients.

The latest government figures show that a total of 2,783 Kovid-19 patients were in hospitals in England overnight on Monday – the daily total since 25 June.

And 478 new patients were hospitalized – the daily figure since June 3.
