In California, high-risk inmates receive the first COVID-19 vaccination

There were California special needs prisoners vaccinated against Covid-19 in Golden State this week, according to a report Tuesday.

Panchayat inmates and staff at a California health care facility in Stockton were preparing to accept the vaccine on Tuesday, said Steve Crouch, director of public works for the International Union of Operating Engineers, which represents employees of maintenance and systems.

Employees receiving vaccinations are in positions at risk of dealing with potentially infected inmates, Crouch told the Los Angeles Times.

At least 150 of the facility’s 2,400 inmates are positive for COVID-19.

Vaccination of staff and high-risk inmates at the Central California Women’s Facility and California Medical Facility, Vacaville, in Chochilla is also expected to continue, according to the California Correctional Health Care Services.

The supply of the vaccine is limited and will be distributed in accordance with state and federal guidelines, the agency said in a statement. “Our first focus will be on people at risk of becoming infected or seriously ill with COVID-19.”

There are more than 90,000 inmates in California state prisons and as of this week, more than 10,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
