A Florida sheriff said he is ready to delegate to all gun owners in his county if violent protests arise.
Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels issued the warning in a three-minute video on Wednesday, saying he was ready to enlist the help of civilians if there are protests that his agents cannot handle alone.
“If we can’t handle it, I will exercise power and authority as the sheriff and make special deputies for every legal gun owner in the county,” Daniels said.
“I will delegate them for this sole purpose: to stand in the gap between lawlessness and civility.”
The sheriff did not indicate that the protests are planned in his suburban Jacksonville county.
Wearing a white cowboy hat in front of 18 deputies, Daniels said he would protect peaceful protests, but added that if someone starts “tearing up Clay County, that will not be acceptable.”
“The moment you leave the protection of the Constitution,” he continued.
“We will be waiting for you and we will give you everything you want: all the publicity, all the pain, all the glamor and glory for the five minutes they will give you.”
