“I am happy not to play against him. He always kills us.”

With the breaking news that Cam Newton joined the Patriots, Jason and Devin McCourty provided an immediate reaction during their Sunday night podcast, “Double Coverage with the McCourty Twins.”

Both members of the Patriots’ defensive playing field gave the go-ahead, as Newton reportedly agreed to a one-year deal.

Devin said: “I am happy not to play against him. He always kills us.

Jason McCourty said he was “excited” and loves the Patriots by adding more good players.

“Bill (Belichick) always says … your goal is to have as many good players as possible. Cam Newton is a former MVP in this league, “said Jason McCourty.” He played in a Super Bowl, he’s the caliber of a player. So I think the better players we have in our locker room, the better we can perform as a team. ”

Brother Devin agreed.

“I think when you add a guy like Cam Newton, it improves our quarterbacks room even more. We’ve talked about that before, the balance and the leap you expect Stiddy to make, ”said McCourty of Jarrett Stidham, who was expected to be the immediate starter in the post-Tom Brady era. “It will be interesting to just train and compete … I think I will add him to our quarterback room with (Brian) Hoyer.” You have veterans there. You have young boys there. I think it will give us a very good opportunity to be good in that position. It’s always great to have a lot of good players, and on top of that. ”

Devin McCourty also said he was not surprised by the news that the Patriots brought Newton in and added a more accomplished quarterback to the mix with Stidham and Hoyer.

“I said it for weeks, nothing about what we do as a Patriots organization ever surprises me … everything we do is always in the process of thinking about trying to win and win championships,” Devin said. “I think that’s what it’s about, trying to improve the team. It never surprises me when we try to do that. Hopefully when we meet, everything goes as planned, and we can try to win games. ”

Newton’s news had McCourty’s cell phone full of text messages.

“I know this is the news everyone was waiting for with the return of the NBA, MLB, NHL and soccer just around the corner. It’s like everyone’s starting to get overloaded with sports, ”McCourty said. “I know that all the big networks are happy. This will give you great themes for Monday. . . I’m already receiving text messages like crazy. It will be a fun time, and I think a proven veteran who walks into his locker room is always great. ”

Jason added: “More competition is going to bring out the best in all of us.”
