Hurricane Laura took on beautiful photos from space


NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy has photographed Hurricane Laura from its vantage point on the International Space Station.

“Seen Hurricane Laura today from @Space_Station. Keep everyone safe, ”Cassidy, the commander of the Space Station, tweeted on Wednesday.

Hurricane Laura hit the Gulf Coast for hours with strong winds, torrential rains and rising seawater as it stormed the shore over southwestern Louisiana near the Texas border early Thursday.

The National Hurricane Center said Laura hit the coast with winds of 150 mph at 2 a.m. EDT as a Category 4 hurricane near Cameron, a community of 400 people about 30 miles east of the Texas border. Laura is slowly weakening into a Category 2 hurricane.

Last week, Cassidy also took incredible images of Hurricane Genevieve from space.

A captain of the U.S. Navy, Cassidy spent 11 years as a member of the SEALs Team of the Navy earlier in his career. He was elected a NASA astronaut in May 2004.

Cassidy recently said goodbye to his fellow NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken in their historic mission to the ISS. Hurley and Behnken crashed into the Gulf of Mexico in a SpaceX Crew Dragon spaceship on August 2, ending their two-month journey into space.

The mission marks the first time astronauts have been launched from American soil since the last Space Shuttle flight in 2011.
