Hurricane Laura Damage: Before and after satellite images of Louisiana show widespread destruction

Hurricane Laura roared early Wednesday morning through southwest Louisiana, killing six and leaving a wide trail of destruction behind. CNN has received new satellite images from Maxar Technologies showing just how destructive the storm was.

At Lake Charles Regional Airport, it appears that the Freeman Jet Center and aircraft hangars on the north side of the airport have sustained significant damage.

A number of buildings are missing large parts of their roofs. It appears that the pound is scattered between the terrain and the runways.

Just two miles to the northeast, homes in the neighborhood west of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women also appear to be suffering significant damage.

On opposite sides of Gauthier Road, piles are polluting the yards of houses and it appears that most of them have extensive roof damage.

A mile southwest, a community of mobile homes along Flounder Drive and Tuna Lane also appeared to have been damaged when the Category 4 hurricane struck Lake Charles, Louisiana.

It appears that some houses along Tuna Lane had floodwaters from a nearby canal near their homes.

Nearly nine miles away, satellite images show that Grand Lake High School escaped roof damage. However, nearby buildings seem to be almost destroyed during the storm.

On opposite sides of Louisiana Highway 384, the roofs of a number of high school buildings are shattered or completely missing.

In Cameron Parish, just 15 miles south of Lake Charles and Calcasieu Parish, satellite images show that floodwaters are still present in Cameron, Louisiana.

Parts of Louisiana Highway 27 still appear to be under water, as are a majority of roads such as Ruby Lane and Jimmy Savoie Road.

Floodwaters are also still present along the coast. But what is even more striking is the effect that the storm surge had on the beach.

There used to be a clean line where sand met the beach in Creole, Louisiana. The geography has now changed, and whole chunks of the beach have been missing.
