Facebook launched its Messenger Rooms as a competitor to FaceTime and Zoom in April and expanded support for up to 50 people in May. Messenger video calls now offer support for iOS screen sharing. Is that how it works.
Facebook adds support for iPhone and iPad screen sharing in Messenger Rooms video calls, which beats Apple as the option is not yet available with FaceTime calls.
Facebook detailed the new capability in a blog post (via MacRumors) It still does not work with the maximum of 50 people in Messenger Rooms, but for now it is functional with up to 16 people.
Screen sharing allows people to instantly share their screen with friends and family individually or in a group video call with up to eight people and up to 16 people in rooms while using Messenger on their mobile devices. We know that people are trying to stay connected more than ever and screen sharing is the last feature we are implementing to bring people closer.
Support for screen sharing with calls to 50-person Messenger rooms will arrive shortly, and Facebook notes that there will also be the option for the caller to control who can share their screen.
We will soon add the ability to control who can share your screen in the Rooms and expand the number of people you can share your screen with up to 50 within the Messenger Rooms. With these new controls, room creators will be able to determine whether to limit the ability to share screens only for themselves or to make the feature available to all participants when creating a room and during the call.
The incorporation of screen sharing with Messenger Rooms is available worldwide now and comes after being available on the desktop and the web.
How to share iPhone screen with Messenger video calls
- After starting a video call, swipe up on the control panel at the bottom of the screen
- Tap “Share your screen” and then “Start sharing”
- Tap “Start Streaming”
- Touch the screen in the blank gray area to exit the screen transmission popup and use the new function
- Swipe up from the Messenger app to navigate to another app and show your screen (this works system-wide)
- You can end screen sharing by tapping “STOP” in the upper right corner of the Messenger app, tapping the persistent red recording pill in the upper left corner of your iPhone, or ending the video call
