How to send hands-free audio messages on Android

Google Assistant let you do tons of things on your Android phone completely hands-free, and a recent update adds the inclusion and sending of text messages to that list.

WhatsApp users are likely to point to a similar feature that has existed in the Android app for a few years, but this new Google Assistant feature is applicable to the Google Messages app. Google Assistant can record, trim and send MMS and RCS text to any contact stored on your phone without pressing a single button. It’s incredibly handy, and this is how you do it:

  1. To say “Hey / OK Google” Call Google Assistant on your device.
  2. To say “Send an audio message [contact name]. ”
  3. Enter your message, but make it snappy – Google Assistant starts recording the moment you say it “Send an audio message [name], ” and stops recording when it feels a little longer than a brief moment of silence.
  4. Google Assistant will ask if you are ready to send the message. You can tell “Yes” to send the message, or “No” cancel. If you can tap on the screen, you can select the “Play” button to listen to the recording before sending or the “Ready” icon to retry (There are buttons on the screen for “To send” of “Tear down” as well as).

I don’t normally send voicemails, but after sending a few with Google Assistant like this, I see the appeal. I mostly use digital assistants for hands-free device controls when driving or engaging in other practical activities. And I often get the likes of Google Assistant like Siri when cooking, so maybe I should start using this when I need to send a message when my hands are covered in flour.

I find it nice compliments The ability of Google Assistant to read third-party app notifications, ek. Just make sure you are regular delete saved recordings from your Google Assistant history.
