How to get rid of that annoying Meet tab in Gmail for Android and iOS

I have nothing against Google’s Meet videoconferencing platform from Google – I’ve even used it a few times with siblings – but I can not help getting annoyed when the feature on me is pushed through other apps. Specifically Gmail. Meet appeared last spring on the desktop Gmail app, but it did not take up much space and was fairly easy to ignore (or remove from your screen, if you will).

Now, however, Meet makes its way to the mobile Gmail app via two tabs that will eventually appear (if they haven’t already) at the bottom of your screen: one named “Mail” and one named “Meet. ” The problem here is not only that you are pressured to use a particular video conferencing app, while all you want to do is check your email, but it also takes up space, expands the bottom margin of the app and gives you almost three fewer lines to work with.

If you plan to use Meet regularly, you may not care. But if you do not and you want to get rid of the excessive tabs, here is how to do it. These instructions apply to the Gmail app on both Android and iOS.

• Select the three-line “hamburger” icon in the upper left corner, scroll down and tap “Settings.”
• Select the Gmail account you want to change.
• Scroll down to the “Meet” category and delete “Screen the Meet for Video Bubbles tab.”

And that’s it! You have some space left in your Gmail app and can now Zoom or any video conferencing app you prefer, without having to constantly remind Meet.
