Google has been working hard to bring many G Suite apps together into one, using Gmail as the “home for work,” but not everyone is a fan of change. Here’s how to disable the Google Meet tab in Gmail for Android and iOS.
For years, Google Meet, Google’s competitor to Zoom, formerly known as Hangouts Meet, was exclusive to those of us with paid G Suite accounts, but starting this year, Google opened it up to everyone else. That being said, for now, the newly launched Google Meet tab only appears in Gmail for paid G Suite accounts on Android and iOS.
Since the redesign was formally announced, people have had mixed feelings about the new tabbed user interface, with some comparing it to Microsoft Teams and others calling it “messy” or “bloated.” If you’re in the last camp, you’re in luck, as Google has conveniently left an off switch for the new Meet tab in the Gmail app for Android and iOS.
How to disable the Meet tab in the Gmail app
To start disabling the Meet tab, open the Gmail app on your Android or iOS device. In the upper left corner, inside the search bar, tap the three-line menu button ☰. In the side panel that opens, scroll down and down tap “Settings”.
On the configuration page, tap your email address to open the specific settings for that Google account. Scroll down to the section labeled “Get together,” which must be between “General” and “Nudges”. In this section, uncheck the box labelled “Show the Meet tab for video calls. “
If you have more than one email address, you will have to enter the settings of each account and uncheck that same box to disable the Meet tab.
With that, everything is ready. The Gmail app for Android or iOS will return to its previous design without the bottom bar. Let us know in the comments or on Twitter if you had any problems with this guide.
