How to change the default email app on your iPhone in iOS 14

Apple’s new iPhone update, iOS 14, launches on September 16. One of the great features is that it allows you to change your default default email application from one of the supported mail applications to another if it supports the feature. If you’re like me, and use Outlook and Gmail instead of Mail, this is a big deal.

Normally, if you click a link to an email address somewhere, your iPhone will open Mail and start a new message, usually from your Apple Pal iCloud account. It is annoying when this happens, because your email does not come from your regular work or personal account, and you may miss replies to inboxes that you do not use.

The change was first announced in June, when iOS 14 was announced by Apple Pull, which appears to be an attempt by competing Pull to eliminate competitors’ complaints.

Changing your default email app in iOS 14 is easy and takes a few seconds. I changed my work to my Outlook account, as this is the only one from which I can normally send emails. But many other apps also support this.

Before we begin, make sure you are running iOS 14.0.1, which fixes a bug in the feature in earlier versions of iOS 14.

You can check by opening Settings> General> About. If you need to update, do the following:

  • Plug in your iPhone and connect to Wi-Fi.
  • Open settings.
  • Tape General.
  • Select Software Update.

Let’s get started.

  • Open settings.
  • Scroll down to the email application you want to use. (I will use Gmail for this example, but it will work the same for anyone supported.)
  • Tap the icon for Gmail.
  • Tap “Default Mail Application”.
  • Change to the application you want to use.

Just this. Now when you tap a link to start a new email to someone, your iPhone will use the default default app you choose. You can change it at any time by following the steps above.
