My girlfriend and I share a single account for each subscription service we use. Most of these services are great with ussing the same account simultaneously, but some of them are not. Spotify used to be one of those more restrictive applications, but the company has just added a new “Premium Duo” subscription plan for US customers (The plan is also available in 54 other countries in Europe and Latin America) that will give partners more freedom to share passwords.
This is how the new Premium Duo plan compares to other Spotify plans and to cousin sAmy plans from her boss competitors, Apple Music and YouTube Music:
- Spotify Premium individual: $ 10 per month for 1 account, login / stream allowed.
- Spotify Premium Duo: $ 13 per month for 2 accounts, both can log in and stream at the same time.
- Spotify Premium Family: $ 15 per month for up to 6 individual accounts (up to 4 simultaneous streams).
- Apple Music Premium Family: $ 15 per month for up to six users.
- YouTube Music Premium Family: $ 15 per month for up to five users.
In addition to the difference in cost and number of accounts, the Duo plan comes with all the usual Spotify Premium benefits: no ads, listen on demand and the ability to upload your own music or download tracks for offline listening. There’s also a special “Duo Mix” playlist that includes tracks that both users listen to in case they want to share new music with each other or have a single playlist running while doing things around the house.
Obviously, Spotify Duo is not just for romantic couples; It could also work well for smaller families, two friends, roommates, or if you share a workspace with someone and want to go to Dutch on a music streaming plan for the office. However, while both Spotify Duo users can listen at the same time, they will have to use the same address in their account information to use the Duo plan (the same restriction applies to Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music Family plans too). With that said, you can listen to anything you want on any device you’re signed in to; you’re not limited to just using your service at home.
While the $ 2 difference between Premium Duo and Premium Family plan may seem nominal on paper, you will actually pay around $ 6.50 per person per month if you split a Duo submarine in half, instead of $ 7.50 per person if you are dividing a prize Family plan. Both are more affordable than having separate $ 10 individual plans, but the A slight additional Duo-level savings will add up to almost two months free for each user over the course of a year a bargain if you don’t need the additional accounts in the Cousin Family plan.
