Manchester United players were “devastated” in the dressing room after their Europa League semi-final loss to Sevilla, according to club captain Harry Maguire.
United took the lead in the first half when Marcus Rashford was fouled in the area and Bruno Fernandes sent out her 22nd penalty of the season to keep his record of 100 per cent off the pitch.
Sevilla bounced back for the interval by former Liverpool winger Suso causing United to come to life after a while. The Reds shot to another goal, but were able to score despite having quite a few chances.
The La Liga side took the lead 13 minutes when Luuk de Jong fired both Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to send his side into another Europa League final with a simple tap-in.
Maguire revealed that the defeat was devastating for the United squad after a performance he feels he deserves a victory.
“The boys were destroyed in there, “Maguire said BT Sport. “We created several chances, but we have to win the game.
“The better team lost. They punish us for missing opportunities. We have been messy at times this year, but today we were not.
“We started with a high press, scoring and we let them out maybe a little too easily. They did not create many opportunities to be honest. It’s a ball in the box, they worked it right on the right side, but we need to do better. We will look at it and we need to improve.
“Passing two crosses is not good enough, but we worked our socks out. We deserved to win the game and deserve to continue, but we ended up falling short for a third time for a semi-final. It’s disappointing.”
The failure of United to win a trophy this year means that it is the first time since 1987-89 that the club has run three seasons in a row without silverware.
Maguire revealed that the players are desperate to end the wait for another great honor.
He added: “Sure, it will happen soon. We want to win it as soon as possible. You can see the talent on the field. If we take another giant step next season, we will improve again.
“It’s disappointing, we want to win silverware. We are up to three semi-finals.
“In the Carabao Cup it was disappointing to lose. In the FA Cup we did not come up. Last night, we were the better team, but we lost.
“Maybe that little bit of infertility cost us in the end, because even though we were upside down and creating opportunities, we should not have given up the second goal.”
