How Manchester United could finish fourth and miss the Champions League standings

Manchester United is fighting Leicester City and Chelsea for a place in the Champions League today.

United is at King Power Stadium for a decisive battle in the race for a place in the top four.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are in pole position the way it is, sit third and know a win or draw will do the job, and could even sneak in a loss if the Wolves beat Chelsea.

But could it be all for nothing? Well, probably not, but there is a highly unlikely scenario that could see them finish fourth and not qualify for next season’s Champions League.

For United to miss a place in the Champions League despite finishing fourth, the Wolves would have to win the Europa League and Chelsea would have to win the Champions League (we told you that was unlikely), while it also ends outside the top four (Leicester winning United and Wolves defeating Chelsea would accomplish this).

This is because one of the prizes for Champions League and Europa League winners is a place in the next season’s Champions League, and the rules state that there can be no more than five teams from a league in the competition .

If this unlikely scenario were to unfold, all five Premier League venues would go to Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester, Chelsea and Wolves.
