Hi Hoynsie. In light of the Indians considering a name change, this is my idea: the Cleveland Blue Sox. Listen to me.
* The name carries some history of the team. In 1901, the Indians’ first year in the American League, they were called Bluebirds or Blues.
* Allows the freedom to develop many great design possibilities without being tied to a specific pet. The name would allow a logo and uniform that is edgy for the retro classic or anything in between. Even with “Sox”, you don’t need to have the twentieth century Red Sox shift or the old White Sox graphics.
* To a lesser degree it would also give the AL a little symmetry since it would now have the Red, White and Blue Sox.
* For those who suggest they are being copycats, who cares? Name them after a bird or animal and it will surely be a name already taken. – Sheldon Borgelt.
Hi Sheldon: I think the Indian organization will consider many things in the coming months. Can they keep the Indian name based on conversations with Native Americans, their fans, sponsors, and other stakeholders in the community? Or do you feel that a change is necessary?
That is what the decision is about.
Hi Hoynsie. If the Indians abandon decades of history to improve political correctness, I will abandon encouraging a team that has hired a myriad of ethnically different players. For me they are / were all Indians. I love them. I will never abandon the Indians. Do not leave me – Chris Herald, San Juan Capistrano, California, via Youngstown.
Hello Chris The Indians have said that they are definitely not changing the name, but are exploring the possibility. There are signs of change across the United States. The statues that have been standing for years are being torn down due to their connection to slavery and racial injustice. The Indians ask the community that supports them if they should be part of that change.
Hi Hoynsie. How about the rebranding of the Cleveland Indians as the Shamrocks (aka The Cleveland Rocks). It would be a marketing bonanza. They could also create the Whiskey Island semi-professional shamrock logo. – Patrick Schmitz.
Hello Patricio I would love to see the shirts.
Hi Hoynsie. What is your prediction for The Tribe’s final record this year? Are they going to make the playoffs? – Brent, Amherst.
Hi Brett: I don’t do many things well. Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you. Making predictions about how the Indians will fare in a particular season is equivalent to changing a flat tire at midnight in Deadman’s Curve. It is a disaster.
For years, the people at the Indians reception celebrated when I last chose them and grieved when I chose them to do well. I’m going to ask for your indulgence for this unique season and stay calm about it.
Hi Hoynsie. Is there any chance that manager Terry Francona will be creative with the initial pitching rotation given the short season? He has demonstrated in the past (2016 postseason bullpen) a willingness to innovate and adapt to his circumstances. – Steve Cornelius, Rocky River.
Hi Steve: Francona manipulated his bullpen in 2016 because a large part of his initial rotation was injured. Right now it looks like he’ll open this 60-game season with his pick of five healthy starters. Asked about using a six-man rotation on Friday, he said that if he did, it would eventually cost his best starters: Shane Bieber, Mike Clevinger and Carlos Carrasco.
In a short season, don’t you want your best pitchers to pitch as much as possible? You’re right, he has a lot of early releases, but as we discovered last year that can turn into fool’s gold in a hurry.
Hi Hoynsie. What will the players the Indians selected in June be allowed to do this year if they are not added to the group of 60 players? – Tom Waltermire, Akron.
Hey Tom: At this time, the Indians are at 58 players in their group for the 2020 season. There is a possibility that the last two spots may be filled by players of the 2020 draft class. Tanner Burns of Auburn and Logan Allen of Florida International, two college pitchers, could be candidates. Allen has already signed, but Burns has not.
If the recruited players don’t join the player pool, Scott Barnsby, director of amateur exploration for the Indians, said they would organize virtual training sessions for them after the minor league season’s cancellation. Later in the year, if the virus allows it, perhaps Indians and other teams will be able to celebrate the League of Instruction in Florida and Arizona and invite their recent recruiting teams.
Hi Hoynsie. Regarding Emmanuel Class’ 80-game suspension for PED use, does that mean it will miss this season of 60 games and 20 more next year? Will you continue to accumulate service time during the suspension? – Steven Ward, Chardon.
Hi Steven: MLB and MLBPA agreed that there will be no carryover until 2021 in the Class suspension if this 60-game season is played until completion. If the virus closes the season, more negotiations will be needed.
During his suspension, Emmanuel will not be paid or earn service time.
