Houston Texans could turn to a familiar face to fill their very high-profile opening.
While they are still more than a month away from searching for a head coach, sources say there is a strong possibility he will turn to Romeo Cranell as their full-time coach. It is currently being discussed at the institute.
The Colonel – now interim coach – is a very respected, loving, long-time defensive coordinator who has been head coach in the past. For the Texans, he could serve as a stop-gap coach, allowing the team to reach 2021 with some stability and move their true coaching discovery to the following off-fee ason when the Covid-19 restrictions traditionally allow for individual search.
No one knows what the country will be like in January, but flying across the country and interviewing so many candidates can be challenging, even on private planes. It is possible that coaching candidates will be interviewed at Zoom. That means a team could invest 30 30 million or 40 40 million in a head coach they’ve never met.
For Houston, the start of a tumultuous but successful tenure under Bill O’Brien, with Cranell holding him back for a year, is an interesting option on how to proceed. It also likes and respects the players.
Cranell, 73, was head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2005-2008 and played a similar role with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012. He has been in Houston since 2014 in various leadership roles.
Under that scenario, VP of Football Operations Operations, Jack Esterby, will continue to run the football run through the transition and could move on to the role if the team does not have a GM. At least, that puts Easterby at the helm for many years until things freeze.
