Tiger Woods found himself 21 shots from the lead entering the final round of The Northern Trust, but that did not mean he was ready to pack it in and advance to the BMW Championship next week. No, no, no … Woods needed a good finish to help his chances get back to East Lake and he wasted no time in doing so on Sunday.
A perfect drive and a dart at Woods’ first set-up for his first birdie of the day after missing one Saturday in the bad spot.
Again in the prime position of the tee at the par-5 second, Woods was aggressive and went for the green in two, just on the first pin-high and two-putted for his second birdie of the day.
On the third par-3, Woods took a conservative line and left himself 45 feet right off the pin. A par-putt par would have been enough, but instead the man who hasn’t made many putters all week rolled into the bomb for his third bird in a row.
If you start the day as far back as Woods did, there’s really no reason not to be aggressive, which is what he was on the short par-4 fourth, driver took and cut one up and after it green for another look at nobility. Another narrow miss gave Woods his second two-putt birdie of the day to go down to 4 under.
At this point, Woods really felt himself. So much so that he, after another laser from the tee, went driver of the deck (!!!), but just briefly came across a greenside bunker that would leave him with a hard third shot with not much green to deal with to work.
That tricky bunker shot with little green to work with? Yeah Al that sounds pretty crap to me, Looks like Tiger aint for me either.
The hot streak came at the end of the eighth hole of par-3, however, after his tee shot sailed to the left and he was unable to get up and down. Whatever momentum that stopped, Woods got it with another arrow in the green back in the ninth, and knocked in his sixth birdie on the front to turn in 5-under 31.
