New Michigan mask rules in effect
The new mask rules went into effect in Michigan at 12 a.m.Monday.
Executive Order 2020-147 reiterates that people are required to cover their faces whenever they are in a covered public space. It also requires the use of facial coatings in crowded outdoor spaces, where adequate social distancing cannot be maintained.
Businesses are expected to deny service to those who refuse.
Macomb County Sheriff will enforce Michigan mask requirement, will not write tickets
Monday in Michigan marked the first day that Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s new face mask requirement went into effect, making it a misdemeanor to refuse to wear one in closed public spaces.
Violators may face a $ 500 fine for refusing to meet the new requirement.
Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham agrees with the requirement, urging people to wear face masks and companies to demand them. Like many departments across the state, Macomb MPs will respond when they receive a complaint and encourage compliance.
But they won’t write a ticket.
“We haven’t written an appointment and I don’t think we will,” said Wickersham.
