Here’s a look at some new Amonkhet Remastered cards coming to Magic: Arena

Collecting Company and Hornet Queen

Standard rotation is almost here for Magic: The Gathering Arena, but before that happens, it’s spoiler season for Amonkhet Remastered!

In short, Wizards of the Coast is literally remastering the sets of Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation of 2017 for Magic: Arena, with 340 maps centered around limited (design / sealed), historic and (eventually) pioneer. But before the actual set arrives on August 13th, Wizards confirmed a few cards that will be reprinted along with the new remastered set.

Here’s a look at two of them, featuring new Destructoid-exclusive art.

First up is Collected Company from the Dragons of Tarkir set, which is a direct 4-cost: Look at the top six maps of your library. Solving up to two creature cards with converted mana costs 3 or less of them on the battlefield. Put the rest at the bottom of your library in any order.

With the right synergy of the deck, this could close the game: especially with some of Amonkhet’s mighty creatures.

Next up is Hornet Queen, which was originally printed in the Magic 2015 (M15) set. It’s a 7 cost (!) Creature with flies and deathtouch, like the following card text: When Hornet Queen enters the battlefield, you make four 1/1 green marks for insects in which you fly and deathtouch.

We had the opportunity to chat briefly with lead designer Mike Turian, who shared the reasoning behind some of these additions and why the team decided to change the art. Turian notes: “For both Hornet Queen and Collected Company, and all newly added cards, we wanted to take Amonkhet Remastered as an opportunity to bring loved ones Magic maps on the Amonkhet plane and show what they would have looked like if they had been originally introduced on that plane. “

He says the renewal of Collected Company is well deserved because it “shows a group of survivors from different races and classes of Amonkhet”, and Hornet Queen deserves new art because it is “one of the most deadly creatures Magic has to offer. “The new art also tells a story,” he says, because the swarm “has invaded the ruined edge of an Amonkhet city. “

I followed up, asked him why Amonkhet would appeal to newcomers, and the answer is as multifaceted as I expected: “If Arena has introduced so many new fans Magic, they probably did not play with most of the cards in the set. I’ve always found the space that Amonkhet offers, and I think they will too. Turian also thinks it’s a great way to limit players to limited: “After compiling the Amonkhet Remastered set, we quickly realized that both Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation will be filled with cards that lend themselves to great limited gameplay. There is a great depth of strategies, fun creatures, and the right balance of tricks and distractions. “

You can find an extensive list of green spoilers for Amonkhet Remastered below! Amonkhet is one of my favorite eras of Magic from a thematic perspective, so I can not wait to dive back into these sets.
