HelloFresh recalls meal kits with onions linked to salmonella outbreaks

Meal-kit provider HelloFresh is the latest company to recall products that potentially contained onions contaminated with salmonella in an outbreak that nearly 900 Americans became ill, including 100 who were hospitalized.

The onions, and food containing them, have attracted a lot of sign-ups and reminders from consumers, most recently released Wednesday by HelloFresh, urging consumers to throw away all onions received from May 8 to July 31, 2020 , according to a report posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

That said, customers who have already eaten meals with the recalled onions should keep in mind that cooking the product thoroughly up to 165 degrees Fahrenheit / 74 degrees Celsius, as instructed by the recipe, would kill the salmonella bacteria.

People infected with salmonella can develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps within hours, or sometimes days, after being exposed to the bacteria. Children and adults 65 and older are more likely to become seriously ill, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Kroger, the country’s largest supermarket chain, recently recalled more than 30 varieties of cheese dips and spreads because they can bind the recalled onions to the outbreak, according to an update late Tuesday by the CDC.

The recalled deli were sold in plastic containers between May 15, 2020 and August 6, 2020, at retail stores under Kroger-owned banners, including Kroger, Fry’s Food Stores, Fred Meyer and Smith’s, the company said.

Consumers have also been warned about eating prepared foods sold nationwide by retailers including Giant Eagle and Walmart, which may also contain eggs contaminated with the bacterium.

Earlier this month, Progressive Produce recalled red and yellow onions sold on the West Coast, specifically red onions sold at Trader Joe’s stores in Arizona, California and Utah, and yellow onions sold at Ralph’s stores in California, according to a recall call posted August 10 by the FDA. Both types of onions were sold separately in bulk containers. The red onions had PLU stickers under the Pacific Gold Brand.

The move came days after Giant Eagle, which operates more than 410 stores in Indiana, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, recalled nearly 50 varieties of ready-to-eat products – including salads, pizzas and hoagies – which contained onions as an ingredient and have been sold to consumers since July 25, according to the company.

Memory of Giant Eagle also includes all bulk and bagged red, yellow and white onions that have been sold in its production departments since June 6, according to a report released by the FDA.

Publix recalls red onions sold in the production departments of its stores in half a dozen states – Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia – with the merchant listing the affected product due in July were scattered.

The reminder follows a public health warning from the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Department that includes meat and poultry products made by Taylor Farms, based in Salinas, California, on July 30-31 and sold in Walmart and Kroger stores.

The warnings stem from a reminder earlier this month by Thomson International of all red, yellow, white and sweet yellow onions shipped nationwide from May 1 to the present day.
