Health Department. concerned about asymptomatic patients spreading COVID-19 in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – As the number of people infected in Lexington continues to rise, so does the number of people being tested. But the health department says that not everyone who gets tested takes the precautions they should.

Lexington-Fayette County Health Department spokesman Kevin Hall says he has seen several cases in the past few days, where someone would get a COVID-19 test, then go out in public while awaiting the results, and then would get a positive result back. Or they’ve seen people go out in public too soon, while still considering themselves infectious.

That is why they are encouraging people to continue to stay home and to wear a mask if it is absolutely necessary to go out.

Another problem you are seeing is that the evidence is getting harder to find. Slot machines not only fill up faster, they can also cause the wait time for results to grow. Hall says some of this is because as the virus spreads, people who may have become infected have to be tested.

“Because it is spreading, more people are being tested because of their conscience, but also more people have to be tested because they are close contacts,” Hall said. “So if this continues to spread and the numbers grow, more and more people have to be tested simply to find out” ‘Do I have it and am I at risk of passing it on to others?’ “

Hall said that with the numbers as they are, they anticipate that July will set the record for positive results in Lexington.
