Apple is pushing new software updates at a falling rate, the latest such update being the new iOS 14.2 developer beta. This beta update comes with a number of significant changes, including a redesigned music interface in the Control Center. Check out our hands-on video while we explore the new iOS 14.2 Beta 1 changes and features.
What’s new in iOS 14.2 beta?
Updated playing controls and AirPlay 2 interface now on screen
The screen playing music control has been updated with various subtle changes and features. The scrubber knob for the playhead indicator is now larger, as is the knob for volume controls. You will also see that the timestamp that shows the current state of the playhead is now directly next to the playhead instead of to the left of the timeline. The rest of the time, which used to be on the right side of the timeline, has been completely removed from this new design.
Other new features include a new AirPlay button design and a new popover style for AirPlay 2 locations. Similar redesign has been implemented for the ability to control other AirPlay 2-enabled speakers and TVs on your local network. Be sure to watch the full video to see what’s new.

Redesign AirPlay 2 controls in Control Center
Like the updated screen interface, the Control Center is now playing the interface and the AirPlay 2 controls have been redesigned.
First and foremost, you’ll notice that the album artwork inside the now-running interface is quite large, and when the AirPlay 2 destination interface is opened, full playback controls for the currently playing music track remain on the screen.
If no media is currently running, iOS 14.2 Beta 1 will present users with a list of suggested media. In the example shown in the video, iOS suggests both recently played music and podcasts.
Other control center features include:
- Quickly check if other AirPlay 2 devices are enabled on your network via Handy Animation
- Large scrubber handle and volume handle
- Source Icon Indicator (eg Podcast or Music)
- The time shown near the scrubber
- Airplay button design differences
- The music app also gets the AirPlay pop power update
Another notable feature that we have already covered on 9to5mac is the new Shazam Music Recognition CCTGL. As explained in the previous post, this new toggle allows users to quickly identify music playing in a local environment or on a device. Tuggle will also make it possible to identify music that is currently being played back by headphones.
In addition to the above features, the initial iOS 14.2 beta includes the following changes:
- People search in the magnifier app for social distance
- View the app with the new Apple Play Watch Solo Loop app icon
- Reduce headphone safety by renaming loud sounds
- Improving handwashing by analytics

The initial iOS 14 public version was just released, and we still have a brand new iOS 14.2 beta to explore. While there’s a lot to take in, it’s not surprising that iOS Pull is pushing ahead with a new beta release to implement iOS 14’s non-cut features, and help squash some lengthening iOS 14 bugs.
