Since March, most of the United States has fled to the scene while dealing with COVID-19. The pandemic has forced us, as a nation, to ask ourselves: is it worth risking lives to maintain the normal life that existed before the virus? Is the will of the individual more important than the safety of the collective?
We have had to adapt almost all aspects of our lives to this new and harsh reality. The way we work, socialize, go out, shop, love, travel, and learn has had to change, and that includes our grooming habits. Since orders to stay home, people have had to cope without having regular access to beauty professionals. People who do our manicures, facials, massages, and cut our hair have been out of reach for many of us. We’ve had to teach us how to remove our own acrylics, give us dye jobs, and yes, even say a silent prayer before bringing a pair of haircut scissors we bought from Amazon to our jagged ends.
As the ways of personal maintenance have changed, so have the accompanying trends. Haircuts are obviously important to people: A handful of people across the country went to the extreme of taking to the streets to demand access to beauty salons, whether it was safe to go or not. Those in areas that have reopened classrooms have found that their local place looks and feels very different from what it was before the pandemic.
With such uncertain times and people who don’t know how long things will stay open (spikes are being seen in cities with less stringent policies), the question of what to do with our hair when do Having access to stylists is crucial. And the orientation of our stylists is more important than ever.
“With people who don’t cut their hair at all, or who try to cut their hair and mess it up, we’re going to see people leaning on their stylists for the most advanced techniques,” says stylist and author Annagjid “Kee” Taylor . These days, it seems like a combination of infrequent salon visits and stylists’ virtual instruction may be the new normal.
And what to do haircuts at the time of a pandemic It seems? We asked some of the best stylists to tell us what trends they are already seeing and the forecast for the near future.
