Gunman Kills His Son, Shoots Federal Judge’s Husband at His New Jersey Home


The son of a federal judge was shot dead Sunday night while opening the door to the family’s home in North Brunswick, New Jersey, a police source told CBS News. The judge’s husband was also shot, according to police sources.

The gunman allegedly fled.

A source told CBS News that US District Judge Esther Salas is believed to be unharmed. Salas’ husband, Mark Anderl, is a criminal defense attorney and former Essex County prosecutor.

The FBI is investigating the shooting and is currently searching for a suspect. The FBI is leading the investigation, working with U.S. sheriffs and state and local authorities.

According to The Associated Press, authorities believe the armed man posed as a delivery man.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy tweeted that “Judge Salas and his family are in our thoughts right now as they face this senseless act.”

Salas is a district judge for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. She is known for presiding over the case of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice and her husband, Joe Giudice. Both pleaded guilty to fraud charges in 2014. Teresa was sentenced to 15 months in prison while Joe was beaten with a 41-month sentence.
