Guard Greg Van Roten has spent the past three seasons with the Panthers and that run gave him a close look at what quarterback Cam Newton is capable of doing on the field when he is not too injured to play.
Van Roten signed with the Jets as a free agent this offseason, so he may have a couple opportunities to see Newton from the rival sideline this season. Newton has signed a one-year contract with the Patriots and Van Roten believes that pairing him with New England head coach Bill Belichick has the potential to make life difficult for the rest of the league.
“What brings you to the Patriots?” Van Roten said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “It is definitely scary to think that if Cam Newton is healthy and on the Belichick offense, you know, in my division, it could be a long year for the other teams, because it changes the rules of the game.” He came to the league, you know, he’s a league MVP, he brought a team to the Super Bowl – he’s just built many quarterbacks differently. And it’s a headache for the game plan. So when he’s healthy, you can stop his career, but then you have to defend the pass. If you can stop the pass, well then you must account for the race. So basically choose one thing and he will do the other. And then you pair it with Belichick, who only cares about winning and Cam really wants to prove himself, so it’s definitely a recipe for disaster for the rest of the league if they can solve it. “
Newton’s training videos have shown a player who appears to be physically ready for next season, but it’s been a long time since he was on the field and there are questions to answer about any lasting tolls the past two years have had. If those responses are positive, Van Roten will likely not be alone with the expectation that life will be difficult for New England opponents.
