With more than 66 percent of the electoral colleges reporting, Pierluisi, who recently served as governor of Puerto Rico last year, received more than 58 percent of the vote compared to nearly 42 percent for Vázquz, The Associated Press.
“We must uphold the decision of the majority,” Vázquez said in a brief speech, according to the newswire.
The governor also warned Pierluisi that he would “aspire” to have the support of those who voted for her.
Pierluisi spoke shortly after the governor, saying “we must all be united to support Puerto Rico going forward,” according to the AP.
More than half of the polls in Puerto Rico reopened for a second round of voting on Sunday after a chaotic first round earlier this month. Voting was held in several areas during the primary 9 August, after many centers at the time or at all failed. The problems caused many voters to stand in long lines before leaving without giving a vote.
Vázquez was sworn in as governor last year after a court annulled Pierluisi’s appointment after briefly replacing him with Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, who resigned.
