“He’s already been subjected to character assassination because Democrats have put him in the crosshairs of another hyperbolically false narrative,” Johnson said, just minutes after a hearing to discuss DeJoy’s moves as the postmaster general began.
DeJoy has come under fierce bilingual criticism in recent weeks as postal delays and changes were made to the Post Office worrying that the post office could not expect the expected uptick in post-in-votes in November due to the coronavirus pandemic.
DeJoy has since announced that he would delay changes until after the election to prevent the appearance of trying to get interested.
But Johnson did not focus his fire on DeJoy, whom he praised for trying to reduce the cost of the Postal Service, but on Democrats, whom he accused of “cynically” trying to create a “false political narrative.”
“According to Democrats, the mayor is trying to sabotage the postal system to exempt voters in the upcoming election,” Johnson said.
Johnson’s remarks are a shaky start to what will likely be a heated hearing, with DeJoy testifying before the first of two congressional committees.
