Google spreadsheets that add Smart Fill and Smart Cleanup

Google’s goal with G Suite is to take advantage of artificial intelligence to increase user productivity, with Smart Compose in Gmail and Docs as prime examples. Google Sheets is getting similar features this year with Smart Fill and Smart Cleanup.

Google wants to automate data entry in Sheets in the same way that Smart Compose saves you from typing repetitive phrases and reduces errors in the process. Smart Fill “detects and learns patterns between columns to automatically intelligently complete data.”

The hints highlight the affected column with users able to press the check mark in the overlay or use a keyboard shortcut.

Suppose you have a column of full names, but you want to divide it into two columns (first and last name, for example). When you start typing the names into a column, Sheets will automatically detect the pattern, generate the corresponding formula, and then automatically fill in the rest of the column.

Meanwhile, Smart Cleanup in Sheets is designed to “make data cleaning faster and more accurate.” After importing, a “Data Cleanup” side panel generates suggestions for removing duplicate rows and addressing other formatting issues.

Once “Done with Cleanup”, you can “Review Column Data” to see visualizations and statistics:

You’ll also see column statistics that provide a quick snapshot of your data, such as the distribution of values or the most frequent value in a column, helping you to quickly detect possible outliers and confidently jump to analysis.

These two features will be available to G Suite customers later this year.
