- The back panel of the Google Pixel 4 XL is taking off for various users.
- The problem could be caused by inflammation of the battery.
The Pixel 4 XL is the best Google phone you can buy right now, but it’s not without its issues. A new problem with the phone has caught our attention thanks to several complaint threads on Reddit and the Google support forum. Interestingly, the glass back panel of the Pixel 4 XL is peeling off for multiple users over time.
The phone glass usually begins to peel off from one corner of the phone. The adhesive separates and users cannot stick it back to the device body.
“It is as if the glue is weakening and the parts are slowly separating,” a concerned Pixel 4 XL user recently wrote on Reddit. Apparently, another Pixel 4 XL user has been on his fourth replacement device in the past 10 months due to the glass detachment problem. Reports on the subject go back several months, and consensus on the cause appears to be a problem with battery bloat. Take a look at some images showing the affected Pixel 4 XL units below.
A Reddit user who claims to be a general manager of a uBreakiFix store, a Google authorized repair partner, suggested that the problem could be caused by faulty battery connectors on the Pixel 4 XL. According to him, the battery connectors are fragile and break even with normal use. “That leads to inflammation of the battery. It is a major problem with the 4 XL series and I do not understand why Google is not supporting it correctly, ”he writes.
We don’t know if battery bloat is the real problem, but it’s a clear possibility. Other causes could be manufacturing defects or the failure of the adhesive used to secure the back panel in place.
What is the solution?
While some users have received replacement Pixel 4 XL units after reporting the problem to Google, others have not been so lucky. Product experts in the Google support forum advise users to contact Pixel support, but the company has not officially recognized the problem.
Battery swelling could be a dangerous problem and potentially a fire hazard.
We contacted Google to understand the true nature of the problem and if the problem is as widespread as it seems. We will update this article as we receive a response from the company. In the meantime, if you are a Pixel 4 XL user, please let us know in the comments if you are also facing a similar issue.
