The December Pixel feature drop quietly added more ML-powered ‘suggestions’ that improve sky images on Google’s first-party devices. At the same time, Google Photos also introduced a new “HDR” filter adjustment.
Back in September, Google Photos Editor was completely redesigned on Android. After Brightness and Contrast, the “Adjust” tab now shows an “HDR” effect that is a badge with a yellow dot on first use.
Like most adjustments, Tapping presents you with a 100-point slider. You can click the HDR button to go to 100 or reset all the way.
This new option is similar to a filter in that it works on any image downloaded online, from screenshots to something. It does not tap into any data captured by my system, but only mimics the HDR effect.
Like the new “Dynamic” and Sunrise / Sunset effects, this Google Photos HDR filter is currently only available on Pixel phones. It does not appear on third-party devices or web clients. It reflects the growth trend of getting new photo features of pixels first.
When announced with the December security patch, this is a server-side rollout that requires the latest version of Photos for Android and is now complete.
