Google offers “seasonal savings” to all Nest thermostats

One of the attractions of having a smart thermostat is how it automatically adapts to your routines. This summer Google offers its “Seasonal Savings” adjustment program to all Nest thermostats.

Google calls “Seasonal Saving” a “personal energy assistant” that makes small schedule adjustments to save energy and ultimately lower your bill. Previously, it was only available to utility customers who were Nest Energy partners.

By adjusting their schedule for just a fraction of a degree each day, users save energy while feeling comfortable. These small changes can really add up: the average customer sees 3 to 5 percent in energy savings on their home’s heating and cooling systems.

The changes influence everything Nest knows about your home and your temperature preferences. Another approach is to save energy during peak cost periods over the course of a day.

The goal is not to “compromise your comfort,” with changes generally “just a fraction of a degree each day.”

Over the course of the entire adjustment period, changes generally add up to about 1 ° F. The highest temperature adjustments generally occur while you are asleep or away, so you may never notice changes made by Seasonal Savings.

Google is now offering seasonal savings to all Nest Thermostat owners this summer in the US and Canada (except Quebec). When available, a notification will appear on the device and in the Nest app to participate.
