Google today announced two major features for its directory service on Apple platforms. Following its removal in 2017, Google Maps will be bringing back its Apple Watch app, as well as adding support for CarPlay Dashboard.
With CarPlay Dashboard you can navigate turn-by-turn appearing alongside audio controls (music, podcasts, audiobooks, etc.) and calendar notifications. Introduced with iOS 13, a map view appears left in a large box, while top right is home for upcoming directions.
Back in March with iOS 13.4, Apple released third-party navigation tips in this split-screen view, and Google Maps has now received support. This integration is available today “on all CarPlay-supported cars worldwide.”
Meanwhile, Maps is returning to Apple Watch. Google’s key is that “smartwatches help you stay connected and see essential information at a glance” while on the go.
You can navigate by car, bicycle, public transport, or on foot:
Get quick estimated arrival times and step-by-step directions to destinations you’ve saved, such as Home or Work, and other shortcuts you’ve assigned in the app. For all other destinations, you can start navigating from your phone and pick up where you left off on your watch.
The app originally suffered at noon from a flurry of other watchOS deviations over low usage. At the time, Google was allowing them to bring it back.
Google Maps for Apple Watch rolls out “worldwide in the coming weeks.”
