Google launches lightweight theme for Nest Hub Max setup

The interface for Nest Hubs and other Smart Assistant screens has been largely unchanged since its launch in 2018. Google is now implementing a tweak to the Nest Hub Max where system elements change from a dark theme to a light one.

Swiping up from the bottom of the screen presents a quick settings panel. You can adjust the brightness, volume, turn camera on / off (in Nest Hub Max), do not disturb, quickly start an alarm, send feedback, and open the full preference page.

This bottom sheet used to be dark with white icons. Now it’s the other way around on two Nest Hub Max devices that we verified today. Brighter background matches the rest of the smart screen user interface, including home screen cards and previous home control tone.

The full settings page now has a clear theme, while main notifications / overlays such as “camera on / off” are also displayed in a brighter background. It is a minor change, albeit somewhat disturbing for those with a dark clock.

This lightweight theme is being implemented in Nest Hub Max with “software version” 28.8.19.320035839, which is different from “Cast firmware version”. It is live on two devices that we verified, but not on a third, and does not appear to be linked to the “Preview Program”.

Chances are it’ll make its way to the Nest Hub, too, though none of our smaller devices have the look yet, and third-party smart displays.
