Google is the latest company to think it’s Snapchat

If the term “stories” is used when you think of a range of visual and textual slides with potentially more interactive elements that social media platforms have made ubiquitous, you probably won’t be wondering where Google is going with its new carousel? Web Stories in its Android and iOS apps.

The company has been testing web stories for weeks or more, but today it has become official with a new presentation medium. Google teamed up with 34 publications, including Vice, The Dodo, and America’s Test Kitchen, to promote their first-line stories. Sites are in complete control of editorial content, including internal sponsorship opportunities.

Web Stories comes with magazine-style thumbnails and embedded headlines. Tapping on a thumbnail brings the reader into a full-screen experience showing pages of static or rotating images. Readers can also swipe into full-screen mode to change the story.

These stories can be found in the Discover screen on the Google app as well as in the relevant search results – there are already more than 2,000 websites with at least one web story index. Depending on the topic, it’s easy to see how someone gets lost in the wormhole of DYY videos or will be able to get the latest news without tapping into the full article.

Smaller and smaller publishers who work with provocative media already have access to story-telling tools from Mac Stories, NewsroomAAI, and WordPress. They can also create their own tool with the help of some published developer documents.
