Before a device or software using Bluetooth can be made available to the public, it must be approved by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). Tonight is a part of Google’s long-in-development Fuchsia OS named with the Bluetooth SIG.
Over the past few years, we’ve been patiently watching Google develop a new operating system, Fuchsia, entirely from scratch. In fact, Fuchsia is proud that it is not based on Linux, unlike Android and Chrome OS.
Google’s community of fans and developers is excited about what Fuchsia could potentially offer, as it’s a completely new operating system built for devices of quite literally all kinds. However, in the time since it was first discovered, Fuchsia has received very little in the way of Google’s public attention, but a few reports round out the Google I / O event last year.
Last night, a new advertisement from Google LLC arrived at the Bluetooth SIG for “Google Sapphire 1.0 Bluetooth Core Host Solution.” We know from previous research into Google’s Fuchsia OS that “Sapphire” is the internal code name for Fuchsia’s Bluetooth stack, and the description of Sapphire on the Bluetooth SIG website also specifically calls out Fuchsia.
Having a part of an operating system with the Bluetooth SIG is actually a fairly common occurrence. Over the years, Android and Chrome OS have each re-certified their Bluetooth software a few times, to accommodate major changes.
So what exactly do we learn from this new mention? Unfortunately not entirely beyond the fact that Fuchsia will support Bluetooth 5.0, which should not come as a surprise as it is the most current version of Bluetooth. In fact, we already knew that Fuchsia was demonstrated at a private Bluetooth SIG event back in 2018.
Instead, the better question is why – why did Google make the effort to get Fuchsia, which still feels like a skunkworks project, certified by the Bluetooth SIG? For now, we can only speculate.
My personal hope is that this is another step towards Fuchsia being publicly unveiled, especially since Fuchsia has apparently reached the ‘dogfood’ stage of development in recent months. On the contrary, it is quite possible that the arrival of Fuchsia at the Bluetooth SIG could not have had any deeper meaning at all. Time will tell.
