The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) is warning pet owners that Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. Some Sportmix is calling out dog and cat food lots due to tests indicating aflatoxin levels that have exceeded acceptable limits.
CNN reports that food poisoning has been linked to the deaths of 28 dogs and eight others who were ill.
The products were distributed nationally in distributive online distributors and retail stores.
Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by the mold Aspirgilus flavus, which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet foods. At high levels, aflatoxin can cause illness and death in pets.
Lot code information can be found on the back of the bag and will appear in three-line code, with the top line in “P XP 03/03/22/05 / L # / B ### / H: MM” format. The lot code remembered is as follows:

If your pet shows signs of aflatoxin poisoning, including drowsiness, loss of appetite, oily jaundice (yellowing of the eyes, skin, or skin due to liver damage) and / or diarrhea, contact a veterinarian immediately. Provide your veterinarian with a complete diet history. Pets will help to take a photo of the food label, which includes the flour number.
Pet owners should not feed their pets or any other animals with withdrawn products.
